How-to · family schedules

Combine your kids’ sports calendars on iPhone.

Hockey in one app, soccer in another, school in a third. Most team and league apps can share their schedule as a calendar link. Here are three ways to bring those links together, and what each one is good at.

Start with each calendar link

Whichever option you choose, you need the updating calendar link from each team or activity. It is usually under Subscribe, Sync, Export or Calendar in the provider’s app or website. Our free calendar guides show where to find it in 11 common services, including TeamLinkt, TeamSnap, RAMP Team App and BenchApp.

Treat these links like a key: anyone who has one can see that schedule. Avoid posting them in group chats.

Option 1: subscribe in Apple Calendar

Apple Calendar can subscribe to each link, and every subscribed calendar appears alongside your own events. It is free and built in. The catch is that changes arrive quietly: when a practice moves, the event simply shows the new time, so you have to notice it yourself. Several busy calendars in one view can also make clashes between siblings easy to miss.

Option 2: copy events into a shared family calendar

A shared family calendar is good when several adults add and edit plans together. Team schedules are a different job: someone has to copy each game and practice in, and keep copying when the team changes them.

Option 3: a family view built for changing schedules

UpNext Family is an iPhone app that reads the same calendar links, keeps them read-only, and puts every child’s schedule in one view. When a team calendar changes, UpNext lists what moved, was cancelled or was added in Updates, so you can review it before you leave. It also points out overlapping events and keeps your arrival time with each event.

Calendar feeds are processed on your iPhone. There is no required account, no ads and no subscription. It is free for one child’s schedule and one calendar feed; Family Unlock is a one-time purchase for more.

Which one should you use?

  • One child, one team, few changes: Apple Calendar is probably enough.
  • Several adults planning household events together: a shared family calendar.
  • Several children or teams whose schedules change often: a family view like UpNext.

You can combine them. UpNext can also read calendars you already keep in Apple Calendar.
